How to use eucalyptus leaves for steam at home

A bowl of hot water and a handful of eucalyptus leaves is one of the oldest home steams for a blocked nose during a cold. Here is how to do it with fresh or dried leaves, and when to skip it.

What you need

  • 10 to 15 fresh eucalyptus leaves, or 1 tablespoon of dried leaves
  • A wide bowl and about 1 litre of just-boiled water
  • A towel

Steps

  1. Tear or crush the leaves lightly to open them up.
  2. Put them in the bowl and pour the hot water over them.
  3. Wait a minute for the water to cool a little, then sit with your face about 30 cm above the bowl.
  4. Cover your head with the towel, close your eyes and breathe slowly for 5 to 10 minutes.

Fresh or dried leaves?

Fresh leaves give a sharper smell. Dried leaves are easier to store and still work well in steam. Our fresh leaves come from young 2 to 3 month plants, and our dried leaves are shade dried to keep their aroma.

When to skip it

  • Do not use steam for babies and young children.
  • Keep the water out of reach and do not use it at a boil, to avoid burns.
  • Stop if your eyes, skin or breathing feel worse.
  • Never drink eucalyptus oil or leaf water.
  • If you are pregnant, have asthma or a fever that does not settle, ask a doctor first.
