Guide · from our farms
Most leaf buyers ask us for leaves from young eucalyptus plants. Here is what that means, how we harvest them, and why it matters for steam, herbal use and oil.
Eucalyptus grown for wood is left for years until the trunk is thick enough to cut. Leaves for steam, herbal use and oil are a different crop. We pick them from plants that are 2 to 3 months old and 6 to 10 feet tall at most.
On many eucalyptus species, young plants carry softer, brighter leaves that look quite different from the long, leathery leaves on mature trees. Picking from young plants also means the leaves come with fewer woody twigs and less dust than leaves stripped from tall trees.
Buyers who use our leaves for steam and distillation tell us young leaves give a stronger smell and more oil. That is why most of our bulk orders ask for them.
Open bulk bags soon after delivery and spread the leaves in the shade. Fresh leaves packed tight in a closed bag can heat up and start to spoil. Distil or dry them as soon as you can.
