Papaya leaves: how families use them and how to store them

Many Indian families buy papaya leaves to make papaya leaf juice at home, or dry them for later. Here is how the leaves are prepared and stored.

How papaya leaves are prepared

  1. Wash fresh leaves well and remove the thick stems.
  2. Crush or blend the leaves with a little water.
  3. Strain the juice through a clean cloth.

Many people use papaya leaf juice when someone in the family is unwell. Please ask a doctor before using it for any illness, and do not use it in place of treatment.

Fresh, dried or powder?

Fresh leaves are used for juice. Dried leaves and powder keep longer and are used to make a tea-style infusion.

How to store papaya leaves

  • Fresh: keep in the fridge and use within 2 to 3 days.
  • Dried and powder: airtight jar away from sunlight and moisture.
